Operating System
The operating system is the most important program that a computer runs. All computers must have an operating system in order to execute programs. Operating systems are required to perform a variety of tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display device, tracking files and directories on the hard drive, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.
